Formal Training & Professional Background:

1979 graduate, Kansas State University,  Interior Design & Business

1974-1980  Beginning as a cabinet maker, moved up the ranks of the Armstrong Cabinet Co.  While working in many different areas of this custom cabinet shop, she learned “hands on” all aspect of cabinet making, finishing, and cabinet design;   By the end of Kristeen’s custom shop experience, she was a trained cabinet maker and finisher.   Kristeen  can spot production and quality issues that others miss, here when evaluating which cabinet lines Armstrong Kitchens will offer to customers.   Her ability to find true value in cabinets, dates from her custom shop years.   

1981  Moved into full-kitchen design and specification, and updated the company name from Armstrong Cabinets to Armstrong Kitchens, in order to reflect the fact that the kitchen business was growing and encompassing many more areas than cabinets.   

1984  Moved the showroom from Georgetown Marketplace (which is now a parking lot for Shawnee Mission Hospital) to its present location on 87th Street

1989  Along with husband Lowell, assumed ownership of Armstrong Kitchens, upon the retirement of founders mark and Betty Armstrong.  

1993  Earned the Certified Kitchen Designer  (CKD)designation from the National Kitchen & Bath Association.

1996  Doubled the showroom size at the same location.   Began using CAD assisted drafting, which at the time was very problematic.   Established a very simple website, (and had to keep explaining to customers what the “www” was for in www.armstrongkitchens.com.)

2003 Voted onto the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau of Greater Kansas City.  Began teaching Kitchen & Bath Design at Johnson County Community College, as the Interior Design department there began to pursue full program endorsement by the NKBA.   Re-vamped the Kitchen and Bath Design coursework towards achieving that goal.

2004  Elected to the Executive Board of the BBB as the Secretary/Treasurer.   JCCC Kitchen & Bath students were chosen as standing judges for the Remodel of the Year contest, by magazine KCH&G.  This would continue for ten years, until the close of the publication.  

2001-2022  JCCC Kitchen & Bath program was granted full NKBA endorsement, one of only 40 in the U.S. and the only one in Kansas, Missouri or Nebraska.  Endorsement has evolved into full accreditation since then.   Since endorsement, the program has (to date) won four National Excellence awards, competing with four-year colleges.  

2015  JCCC begins offering an Associate Degree in Kitchen & Bath Design, and  Kristeen now teaches the Advanced Kitchen & Bath Design course as part of this change.

2019 Leveled up NKBA certification to CKBD, Certified Kitchen & Bath Design.  

Meanwhile:

Kristeen’s work and articles have been published many times, in  Womens  World magazine, Kitchen & Bath Business, Woman’s Day magazine, DuPont publications, KCH&G, KC Home, the Kansas City Star, and many others over time.   Kristeen has won numerous design awards over the years, ranging from NARI Remodel of the Year, to NKBA’s Best Ever contest and others.    She speaks to a variety of groups for many kinds of occasions.
